I then chose the two remaining colours I would work with. Phthalo blue green shade was a natural with the orange of the cadmium red. Golden's green gold was the yellow I chose because it mixes well with white to form a light greenish yellow and with phthalo blue to make a great green. The only other colour used was quinacridone burnt orange which I used with the raw umber to create a beautiful rich dark reddish brown.
The next decision involved alternating the colours throughout the pictorial space to create rhythm and animation. The greens ended up varying from a cool blue green to a warm yellow green. Alternation of temperature and value also contribute to the rhythm of the painting.
This composition is a variation of a vanishing point format.
Although I chose to use hard edges and well-defined shapes in this painting, it would have been possible to treat the subject in a very painterly way. I will add to this lesson with other versions of this drawing using different treatments and different palettes.
